“Keeping some sort of record” Project WIP

This post documents my current project in a drawing class in which we were instructed to “keep a record” by writing down things we do within a day, even if they are mundane or specific. I began writing my list with the typical things one does within a day, including things I am scheduled for weekly, and things I do in my leisure time.

I listed 25 things such as putting on perfume, attending my weekly DND campaign, clocking in at work, and going to the local comic shop for my weekly pull-list. Out of all the things listed I landed on “Listening to music I love…” as music is a constant in my day to day life.

Chances are high if you see me anywhere I will have my headphones with me. I listen to music a lot, always have. Though I am not a musician in any capacity I like many genres, styles, as it is something I connect with. I grew up in a house where my parents were intentional with music. It wasn’t just a noise to fill the space but often something to uplift and express. They are not musicians either, though my father can play drums. If my mother had a particular song or album on repeat it was because she was feeling a certain emotion. My father’s favorite genre is rock and metal, my mother’s is rap or praise music.

My favorite genres are metal, rap, k-pop, and classical. These are what I often listen to when you see me wearing my headphones. These genres aren’t to simply fill with noise, though sometimes it can be (classical is my go to “filler” music), I often swap up what genres i’m listening to based on moods.

With this piece I wish to provide a visual to the expression music provides to me. I don’t think that sentence exactly provides a description of what I want to provide with this piece but it will do for now. I mainly want to work on this piece in varying grey shades of monotone, I don’t exactly see it as one with color. the dark figure will keep the focus away from the body and cause you to hone in on the facial expressions which will be in white liner. The “safety net” will also be in a stark white, I want it to almost have a glowing property. I also would like to include a progression of notes surrounding the figure. There are musical chord progressions that can make one feel a happiness, sadness, and so on to other emotions. These notes will provide “context” for the emotion in the piece.

Included below are my notes and a few thumbnail sketches to showcase the start of my process! I will be posting more updates on this project until it is done.
